What to Do In an Emergency While Your Child Is AbroadYou’ll want to be informed in case of any emergency, whether it is a natural disaster, a political uprising in the host country or a medical situation with your child. Talk with your child about how you will deal with any emergencies that might come up while they is away. You and your child should discuss how you will contact each other in case of emergency. Go through different emergency scenarios, such as family emergencies, medical emergencies, and natural disasters. Be sure to save several means of communication lined up, such as out-of-state contacts, in case your child cannot get through to you directly. You and your child should review the host university or their study abroad program’s emergency procedures. Your child will likely have to provide emergency contact information to their in country director; you may want to be the primary contact. Your child should register with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their host country. This will help facilitate communication and, if necessary, evacuation in case of an emergency. Also, remember that it is a good idea for you to have your passport, in case you need to go see your child in an emergency situation. Remember to also check and review your child’s travel insurance with him/her before they depart. Must Ask Questions
