Study Abroad Scholarships and Grants

Scholarships and grants are a perfect way to fund you child’s study abroad experience because they do not have to be paid back scholarships are often based on merit, while grants are based on need and other criteria.

There are various types of organizations that provide study abroad scholarships and grants, including:

  • Your child’s school

  • State and Federal Governments

  • Nonprofit Organizations

  • Church and religious organizations

  • Work organizations

  • Study abroad program providers

Your child should talk to their financial aid and study abroad advisors. They can help point your child in the direction of scholarships and grants he/she can use for study abroad. You and your child should make sure to research and plan ahead, so that he/she doesn’t miss any important deadlines.

Must Ask Questions

  • How does my child apply for this scholarship or grant? When is the deadline?

  • When and how will my child find out about the status of their application?

  • How will my child receive the award? Will it be mailed to them directly or sent directly to their school?

  • Are there any restrictions on what my child can use this scholarship or grant for?

Tips for searching for scholarships and grants

  • Encourage your child to start searching early and to keep track of deadlines. Keep checking for new scholarships and grants. Search here for Study Abroad Scholarships

  • Don’t limit your search to only study abroad related scholarships and grants. Many general scholarships and grants can also be applied to study abroad.

  • Scholarships can add up. It may seem like a lot of work to apply for many small scholarships, but remind your child and yourself that any amount of funding makes a difference.

  • Look for scholarships specific to the country where your child will be studying.
