AMIDEAST Area & Arabic Language Studies in Amman, Jordan (Semester/Academic Year)

Students enrolled in AMIDEAST’s Education Abroad Program in Amman will have opportunities to study fascinating Middle East topics in a program based at the AMIDEAST Center in Amman’s Abdoun district. Amman, capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is an ancient city facing distinct modern challenges, thus making it an exciting place to live and study. Built on seven hills, Amman has expanded in size and population from a quaint sleepy town at the close of World War II, to the bustling, multicultural metropolis it is today. Students live either with Jordanian host families or in shared apartments with other AMIDEAST students. Students in the Area & Arabic Language Studies Program in Amman carry a 14 to 17 credit hour course load per semester. All students enroll in Modern Standard Arabic, Colloquial Arabic, and two to three other courses from offerings in Middle East and North African studies in a variety of disciplines taught in English. AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program courses in Amman are taught by a select group of Jordanian professors from a variety of institutions in and around Amman. These lecturers possess a strong instructional experience in English-speaking environments. All faculty members have received post-graduate degrees from North American or European universities, or have spent considerable time at English-medium institutions as students, faculty members, visiting faculty or visiting researchers. In addition to academic coursework, our students benefit from an on-site orientation, the opportunity to live with a Jordanian family, structured ways to meet local students, and organized excursions to exciting locations around Jordan.

AMIDEAST Area & Arabic Language Studies in Muscat, Oman (Semester/Academic Year)

This program takes place in the Sultanate of Oman, one of the most intriguing destinations in the Arab world. A country with a long history and distinctive identity, Oman is AMIDEAST’s newest locale for an Area & Arabic Language Studies Program. Well-known for its long-standing trade routes stretching from East Asia to East Africa, notably along the southern half of the Strait of Hormuz, Oman has been recognized since ancient times as one of the greatest seafaring nations of the world. Students enrolled in the AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program in Muscat carry a 14 to 17 credit hour course load per semester. All students enroll in two to three Arabic courses and two or three other Area studies courses (depending on the student’s preference) from a variety of disciplines taught in English. Topics range from economics, Media Arabic, Middle East and North African studies, political science, religious studies, and women's studies. Additionally, students participate in exciting program-organized excursions around Oman. Visits to major attractions and historical sites may include Jabal Shams & Nizwa, Wahiba Sands, and a Dhow Cruise along Bandar Khairan. Students who study in Oman with AMIDEAST spend the semester living in its capital city, Muscat. Situated along a natural harbor on the northern coast of Oman, Muscat has been an important trading post for much of its history. Students enrolled in the AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program in Oman live apartment-hotels in an Omani student neighborhood, in the Al Khoudh area of Muscat. AMIDEAST students will be paired with other AMIDEAST students as roommates in the accommodations. The apartment-hotel will house 4 students per apartment, with 2 students sharing a room. They include a shared living room, kitchen, and 2 full baths.

AMIDEAST Intensive Arabic in Rabat, Morocco (Summer)

The Summer Intensive Arabic Program in Rabat, Morocco offers Arabic language courses in two 4-week sessions. Classes meet 5 hours per day, 5 days per week. Each student will receive 100 hours of Arabic language instruction in each session, including both Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial Arabic. One summer session covers the material usually presented in one semester on a U.S. campus. Students are given placement tests prior to arrival and are placed in the level appropriate for their Arabic language proficiency. The curriculum is based on AMIDEAST's Arabic Language and Culture Curriculum, which is functional and communicative in its approach. The teachers are carefully selected native speakers with excellent language teaching experience and skills.
