Intensive Language Courses in Germany

DAAD offers grants to graduate students to attend eight-week intensive language courses at leading institutes in Germany. Detailed descriptions of the institutes, their teaching philosophies, course content, as well as course dates are available on their websites: Goethe-Institut www.goethe.de; S + W speak + write www.speak.de; did deutsch-institut www.did.de; Carl Duisburg Centren: www.cdc.de; InterDaF Leipzig: www.uni-leipzig.de/interdaf; Requirements: Scholarships are awarded to full-time graduate students in any field of study except German Studies, German Language and Literature or German Translation and Interpretation. Applicants must have completed three semesters of college or university level German or have achieved an equivalent level of language proficiency at the time of application. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of academic records and personal statements. Terms of Award: DAAD will consider individual placement preferences, but grantees must accept DAAD’s final decision as to time and place. Courses can be taken between June and January of the following year. The scholarship of approximately €2,300 covers tuition, accommodations (arranged by the host institute) and a cash allowance, depending on the choice of course, location and accommodation. DAAD will also cover health insurance and provide a lump sum toward travel costs. Scholarship recipients are expected to devote their full attention to the course and may not concurrently undertake individual research. A written report is requested within four weeks of the end of the course.

Research Grant for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists

These grants are awarded primarily to highly qualified PhD candidates with ABD status at North American institutions or to individuals wishing to earn a doctoral degree in Germany. Funding may also be granted to recent PhDs who would like to conduct research in Germany. Requirements: Applicants are expected to have a well-defined research project that makes a stay in Germany essential, and should have an invitation to a German university or research institution to pursue their project. Applicants in all academic fields are welcome to apply. For medicine or dentistry, please contact DAAD New York. Applicants in the arts, humanities and social sciences should have a good command of German. Applicants must have achieved ABD status no longer than four years before applying. Postdocs may apply for long-term grants up to two years after completion of their PhD, and for short-term grants up to four years after completion of their PhD. Foreign nationals are eligible if they have been full-time students/scholars at an accredited US or Canadian university for at least two years at the time of application. Terms of Award: Grants are awarded for one to 10 months during the German academic year (October 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016). Additional two-month language course grants may be awarded to long-term grant holders, without separate application. Monthly stipends are approximately €1,000. DAAD will also cover health insurance and provide a lump sum toward travel.
