Whether you approach writing as a future vocation or as a creative outlet, our courses help you discover and explore your voice and hone your craft. From short story writing and the graphic novel to digital communication and writing for the screen, our courses cover a wide variety of styles and genres. The required 1-credit Writing for the 21st Century Workshop is designed to tie these varied skills together, and this workshop can be combined with a range of writing-related courses, Irish studies courses, or an internship or service learning placement to create your 16-credit program. Participating in a writing-focused internship or service learning placement and accompanying seminar is a unique way to apply what you’re learning in your writing classes within a real-world setting. Each semester, an anthology of all types of student work will be compiled, and you'll also have the option of reading it in front of an audience. Dublin will also be your classroom. Inspiration abounds in this city that writers such as Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Seamus Heaney, and Jonathan Swift called home. Visit the Dublin Writers Museum and James Joyce Cultural Centre to explore the city’s rich literary past, and don’t miss seeing the 7th century Book of Kells housed in Trinity College Dublin. Does it get much better for a writer? We want you to feel at home in Dublin, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad experience possible.

You will love the crystal clear blue waters, the breathtaking mountains, and everything in between. But there is more to Cape Town than its beauty, its dynamic society is ever-changing and growing, and you can witness it first-hand. Service learning in and around Cape Town is a core component in our program. Students taking one of the IES Abroad courses are required to complete 60 hours of volunteer work while in Cape Town. Twenty of your 60 hours of volunteer work will be at Egoli, a settlement that receives no government services like water or electricity. With your help on community-driven projects like providing sustainable and reusable solar reading lamps or creating a shared garden, you (like many IES Abroad students before you) can make a small, but life-changing contribution to the people of Egoli. Use the remaining 40 hours of volunteer work to participate in field work and research opportunities. UCT students often join SHAWCO, the Students Health and Welfare Centres Organisation volunteer program of the University, as their organized placements will give you practical exposure to topics you are learning at the leading research university of South Africa, the University of Cape Town (UCT). Through these opportunities, you will get a first-hand look at the society and issues affecting different groups in Cape Town. While in South Africa, you will complete 15-19 credits. These credits can be all taken through UCT courses or in a combination of 2-4 UCT courses (12 credits) and an IES Abroad course (4 credits). Located in a pleasant suburban area five miles from the City Center, UCT first opened in 1829, as the South African College. UCT is the oldest university in South Africa, and has undergone incredible change since its opening, particularly since the end of the apartheid, working to make quality higher education available to students regardless of race.
