The EU Summer Program gives you the opportunity to intensively study the past, present, and future challenges of European integration. The program begins in the heart of Europe—Freiburg, Germany—where you’ll start a specialized curriculum that will take you on a 16-day experiential journey through Bosnia-Herzegovina and Turkey. In Turkey, you’ll visit Izmir, an economic/business hub on the Aegean Sea, where you’ll stay on the campus of Izmir Economics University to spend time with Turkish students, including a day at one of the local pristine beaches. After Izmir, you and your peers will travel to Istanbul to study the politics, minorities, religion, and history of a city that spans two continents. The Turkey trip also includes a visit to Ephesus, to the house where the Virgin Mary allegedly retired and died; and to the Gallipoli Peninsula, the battle site on the Dardanelles, that was the site of one of the Allies' great disasters during World War I. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, you will travel to Sarajevo, called the “Jerusalem of Europe” because of its once historic mix of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. As a special feature, you will study the implications of World War I, which started in Sarajevo after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in 1914. After Sarajevo, you’ll have a two-day trip to Srebrenica, followed by a visit to Visegrad.
