IES Abroad Nantes - French Language Immersion & Area Studies - Semester/Year

Our Study in Nantes Program has two important goals: to improve your written and verbal proficiency in French through language and area studies courses and to introduce you to contemporary France and its role in the European Union. Founded in 1965 and celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, this program offers you the opportunity to fully integrate into French society and function completely in French, thanks to the program’s focus on full immersion and the fact that there are few Anglophones in Nantes. This program has a close relationship with the Université de Nantes. You have access to the school’s libraries, computer labs, cafeterias, and sports facilities, and you are welcome to join student clubs and other social and sports organizations. You also have many opportunities to enroll in local university courses. IES Abroad courses are taught in French by native French faculty, many of whom are professors at the Université de Nantes. Nantes will be your classroom. Visit La Beaujoire Stadium to watch soccer games or Ile de Versailles to people watch and explore. Tour the museum and home of Nantes’ own science fiction author, Jules Verne. Hop on a bicycle and explore what makes Nantes a model “green” city in France. Practice your French while ordering crêpes in the region where they were first made. You can also enroll in a teaching internship, which includes time spent working at your placement in addition to an academic seminar that helps you contextualize what you’re learning. During your time in Nantes, you stay with a local family, many of whom have been welcoming our students into their homes for years. Living with your host family helps you practice your French-speaking skills and get to know what daily life in Nantes is truly like.

No matter what your current level of Italian language proficiency is, this program is for you. Students enroll in an Italian language course as well as four additional courses, taught in both English and Italian. If you have four or more semesters of Italian language, you can enroll in our Advanced Italian Studies Program, which is designed to be a full immersion experience including Italian-taught courses, an Italian-only language pledge, and more. Rome will be your classroom. Can you imagine places like the Vatican, the Pantheon, the Forum, or the Colosseum being part of your education? Our courses are experiential in nature, and we organize more than 150 course-related excursions each semester to historical, artistic, and cultural sites that take advantage of the city’s many opportunities. You can also enroll in courses at a local university, where you will experience first-hand the Italian educational system. Maybe you’ll even make some Italian friends while you’re at it. If you want to become familiar with the local practices, work culture, and build professional relationships with Italians, enroll in an internship or social action placement. These are unique opportunities for you to build an international résumé as you practice the language and develop your professional and personal skills.
