Cities in the 21st Century: People, Planning, and Politics - Fall 1

This program combines an innovative urban studies curriculum with fieldwork involving key actors and stakeholders — public agencies, planners, elected officials, NGOs, and grassroots organizations. You will spend time in four cities across the globe to better understand the interconnected social, physical, economic, environmental, and political systems affecting urban environments. South Africa: Education and Social Change

This summer program examines the role of education in South Africa in the context of the country’s historical circumstances, contemporary public policy, and social and economic development. Students typically spend time at primary and secondary schools as well as adult educational centers in urban and rural KwaZulu-Natal. Brazil: Social Innovation and Community Development

This program looks at socioeconomic conditions and the impact of local development efforts and public policy on lives and livelihoods in northeastern Brazil. You will interact with different ethnic groups, including indigenous and Afro-Brazilian populations, to gain insight into the challenges and benefits of implementing social change within a multicultural environment.
