Get Your PassportGet your passport as soon as possible. Or, if you have a passport, check that expiration date will remain current during the entire time you will study abroad. For a cheaper and less stressful experience, begin the process at least six months prior to your departure. You must have a valid passport in order to enter most countries. In addition, if you are traveling by air, you must have a passport in order to re-enter the U.S. Currently, if you are traveling to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or Bermuda by land or sea, you do not need a passport, although other documentation will be required. However, starting June 1, 2009, you must have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document in order to enter the U.S. See New Passport Requirements for more information. Also, remember that you must have your passport prior to obtaining a Student Visa if you travel to a country that requires student visas.
