Get Your Passport



Get your passport as soon as possible. Or, if you have a passport, check that expiration date will remain current during the entire time you will study abroad. For a cheaper and less stressful experience, begin the process six months prior to your departure.

Every country except Mexico requires that U.S. citizens traveling abroad have a valid passport. Also remember that you must have your passport prior to obtaining a Student VISA if you travel to a country that requires student visas.

You can obtain a passport through an independent passport service or apply in person.

Steps to getting your passport:



(1)     Complete the application for a U.S. Passport

(2)     Obtain proof of citizenship, which includes any one of the following:

(3)     Provide proof of identification, which includes any one of the following:

  • State driver’s license
  • Any federal, state, country or city government ID
  • Military ID (military and dependents)

(4)     Obtain two passport photos:

  • Passport photos must be 2x2 inches
  • Photos must be identical and in color
  • Pictures must be taken within six months of applying for a passport
  • Photos must be of the full face, front view with a white or off-white background
  • Uniforms may not be worn unless it is a religious uniform that is worn daily
  • Dark glasses or non prescription tinted glasses are not permitted

(5)     Pay passport fees. Passport fees can be paid with VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Debit/Check cards, Checks or money orders. The following is a list of fees for obtaining a passport

  • Passport fee: $55
  • Security surcharge: $12
  • Execution fee: $30
  • Rush order fee (delivery within two weeks): $60

(6)     Apply in person with your application materials at one of the more than 7,000 locations that accept passport applications.
