Costa Rica

Meaning “rich coast” in Spanish, Costa Rica certainly lives up to its name. A tropical paradise where the coast is never far, Costa Rica also contains volcanoes, jungles, and beaches on both oceans.
Costa Rica has a booming ecotourism industry thanks to its biodiversity and the importance of national parks, which cover nearly a quarter of its territory. Amazingly, 5% of the biodiversity worldwide is contained within this small area that comprises only 0.1% of the earth’s landmass, so animal lovers should flock to see the various species of monkeys, sloth, birds and parrots, and reptiles, including the endangered green turtle. Another interesting fact is that after Costa Rica’s civil war in 1948, it became the first nation to constitutionally abolish its military. Since then the country has seen a peaceful, stable democracy relatively unhampered by violence.
Fortunately for students, travelers, and investors, Costa Rica also has a strong economy and high standard of living. The country has always emphasized free primary education, and it boasts one of the highest literacy rates in Latin America. Therefore, Costa Rica is an ideal location for students to learn and research in the preserved wilderness and, of course, to take breaks on the white sandy beaches.

Climate

Costa Rica has a tropical climate that becomes cooler with increase in altitude. The rainy season occurs between May and November.

Health and Safety

Malaria is a risk in some northern provinces of Costa Rica.

Religion and Festivals

Christianity is the predominant religion, with the majority of Costa Ricans professing Roman Catholicism, which is the official state religion. Buddhism has a following among Chinese immigrants.

Transportation

Costa Rica borders Nicaragua and Panama, and some wishing to cut expenses enter the country by bus. With two international airports, Costa Rica also services flights from Central America and the United States. Within the country, bus is a common form of public transportation. Road conditions are less than ideal off the main roads.
