Studying and Discovering Turkey

plus

Turkey has been described as the land where East and West merge into a single entity. Turkey is home to the legendary city of Troy, the oldest evidence of ancient civilization and the center of several historic empires. Today Turkey is one of the most cosmopolitan countries in the world. The populous is full of youthful energy, but also treasures its tradition. The best elements of the new and the old make Turkey an attractive destination for study abroad. The exotic mysticism of Turkey’s past, the welcoming disposition of her citizens, myriads of architectural wonders and the city’s cosmopolitan nature make Turkey a great destination for any student looking for an adventure abroad.

From experiencing the pleasures of a hamam, to a spending the night in a cave hotel, the possible adventures are boundless. Whether you choose to spend most of your time in a metropolitan city like Istanbul, or spend a day exploring the ruins of an ancient temple, every corner of the country holds a treasure of its own. As attractive as the aesthetic pleasures of Turkey may be, its greatest treasure remains transcendent, and can only be understood through direct experience. Scattered across the landscape are sights of sacred significance to many religions, buildings that predate the earliest record of written word, and images of breathtaking beauty. Simply having a conversation over tea with a Turkish citizen can offer deep insights into the nature of Islam and Turkish history. It is precisely this intellectual, historical and cultural richness, which makes Turkey the perfect study abroad destination.

When to Go

Turkey’s Mediterranean climate is most enjoyable during late spring or early summer. If exploring the cloudless inland areas of Turkey, the weather may shift to extremes so prepare accordingly. Summer also marks the period of Islamic religious devotion; the months of Ramadan reveal the full cultural richness of Turkey and they end in a glorious celebration; however one must be aware of Islamic tradition before visiting Turkey during this sacred time, in order to refrain from unintentionally offending the locals.

Education

Being the center of more than one empire throughout history, Turkey always valued intellectual achievement. The establishment of the first universities dates back to the 15th century.
