Brent spent a semester in Berlin, Germany. Talking about the benefits he gained from study abroad, Brent says, "I feel as though the biggest benefit I have came away with after my study abroad experience is becoming more independent. Another big benefit for me personally was getting the chance to interact with people who have extremely different views on the world than I am used to. Academically and professionally, I came away from this experience with a working knowledge of a new language, which is always a valuable asset."
Like most students who study abroad Brent faced some challenges. "Studying abroad has been quite a challenge," he says. "For me, coming to a country where I didn't know the language or any of their customs made doing even the simplest daily tasks a challenge. At times I felt like I was an alien who had just landed in some different universe but as the quarter progressed I found myself acclimating to the German and European ways of life."
Describing his experience as a minority student abroad, Brent says, "I always felt very comfortable about being a minority in Germany. Germans are, for the most part, very open-minded about new cultures and people." Brent goes on to say, "I would definitely recommend minorities to pursue any study abroad opportunities. Furthermore, I would suggest going someplace that will make you step outside of your comfort zone and experience a culture very different from your own."
