Volunteering abroad is a long-term commitment. It is wasteful for both the organization and yourself to change or discontinue a program. Therefore, it is essential for you to choose the right program for yourself. Here are some factors for you to consider when taking your pick:

• Is the organization reputable?

• What is the length of the program?

• Are there any safety issues in the country you're working in?

• Does the program suite your personal interest or may be any help to your future career?

• Is the program flexible? Will you be easily able to change starting dates if something urgent comes up? Will there be accommodations to suite your financial need?

• Can you live in a challenging environment? The places you will be volunteering at may very likely have less luxury than that we are accustomed to.
