IES Abroad Dublin – Writers Program

Writers in Ireland have used words and images to inspire, inform, persuade, and entertain for centuries—think W.B. Yeats’ celebrated lines, James Joyce’s “universal city” in Ulysses, the stage of the Abbey Theatre, and the blogs of The Irish Times. Through study of contemporary Irish authors, as well as those of the past, this IES Abroad program is designed to inspire and challenge writers to elevate their skills to the next level.

Whether you approach writing as a future vocation or as a creative outlet, our IES Abroad courses help you discover and explore your voice and hone your craft. From short story writing and visual narratives to poetry, nonfiction, and playwriting, our courses cover a wide variety of styles and genres.

Customize your course schedule with area studies courses from our Irish Studies program or a writing-focused part-time internship or service learning placement at no additional cost. Each semester, students compile an anthology of creative works. You have the option to help create the anthology through the course Homespun Sails. Check out previous work at www.homespunsails.org.

Attend our four-day Writers Retreat where you focus exclusively on your writing in an environment conducive to reflection, renewal, and inquiry. The retreat takes place at an undisclosed location, revealed to you just before you embark. Though designed for independent work, the retreat also includes workshopping opportunities, site visits, and guest speakers.

Dublin will be your classroom. Inspiration abounds in this UNESCO City of Literature that writers such as Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Paula Meehan, Seamus Heaney, Edna O’Brien, and Jonathan Swift all called home. Visit the National Library of Ireland and the Ulysses Centre to explore the city’s rich literary past. See the 7th-century Book of Kells and the Long Hall Library at Trinity College Dublin. With its vibrant literary and arts scene and the abundance of eclectic bookshops and quirky cafes, Dublin is a city that caters to the bibliophile.

Applying to an IES Abroad program is easy—just follow the three study abroad application steps outlined below. If you have any questions during the application process, visit the FAQs or contact your Program Advisor at 800.995.2300. You can do this!

1. Check the application deadline and review the application requirements for your study abroad or internship program of interest. Plan to submit all of the required information by the deadline.
2. Create an account or log in to complete and submit the initial online study abroad application.
3. After 1-2 business days, sign in to your MyIESabroad account to view and submit the rest of the application requirements. You will also receive regular emails about deadlines and missing items.
