AMIDEAST Area & Arabic Language Studies in Amman, Jordan (Semester/Academic Year)

Students enrolled in AMIDEAST’s Education Abroad Program in Amman will have opportunities to study fascinating Middle East topics in a program based at the AMIDEAST Center in Amman’s Abdoun district. Amman, capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is an ancient city facing distinct modern challenges, thus making it an exciting place to live and study. Built on seven hills, Amman has expanded in size and population from a quaint sleepy town at the close of World War II, to the bustling, multicultural metropolis it is today. Students live either with Jordanian host families or in shared apartments with other AMIDEAST students. Students in the Area & Arabic Language Studies Program in Amman carry a 14 to 17 credit hour course load per semester. All students enroll in Modern Standard Arabic, Colloquial Arabic, and two to three other courses from offerings in Middle East and North African studies in a variety of disciplines taught in English. AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program courses in Amman are taught by a select group of Jordanian professors from a variety of institutions in and around Amman. These lecturers possess a strong instructional experience in English-speaking environments. All faculty members have received post-graduate degrees from North American or European universities, or have spent considerable time at English-medium institutions as students, faculty members, visiting faculty or visiting researchers. In addition to academic coursework, our students benefit from an on-site orientation, the opportunity to live with a Jordanian family, structured ways to meet local students, and organized excursions to exciting locations around Jordan.

AMIDEAST Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco (Semester/Academic Year)

The AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program offers a diverse curriculum through direct enrollment at Al Akhawayn University (AUI), a private Moroccan university in Ifrane patterned on the American model of higher education. Students on the program will live in residence halls on the 98-acre AUI campus, which includes modern classroom buildings and dormitories, as well as a library and IT facilities, sports facilities, and a student center including dining halls. Upon arrival in Morocco, AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program students participate in an in-depth, three week-long academic Moroccan Arabic and Culture pre-session program designed to introduce them to Moroccan Arabic, Moroccan culture, and daily life and familiarize them with the logistics of the program. Students stay with Moroccan host families during the Moroccan Arabic and Culture program that takes place at the AMIDEAST Center in the Moroccan capital of Rabat. Following the pre-semester program students move to Ifrane, where they participate in AUI's international student orientation on the AUI campus. Once the semester starts, visiting students are fully integrated into the social, academic, and cultural life of AUI, and they are able to make strong and lasting connections with their Moroccan peers. Students will find a variety of cross-cultural learning opportunities on campus. AUI has a full range of student clubs, all of which are open to AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program students; they include sports, artistic, cultural, and academic groups. The university also sponsors numerous activities each week. Community service is required of all matriculated undergraduates at AUI; therefore, such opportunities are widely available to AMIDEAST students as well.

AMIDEAST Learn & Serve in Tunisia (Summer)

Learn & Serve in Tunisia is a unique summer education abroad opportunity for undergraduate students to study in the Middle East/North Africa region and engage in intense service learning experiences with Tunisian students. The program includes a study component on Tunisian culture and society, a service learning component as native speaker resource persons in an English language immersion program for Tunisian high school students and a volunteer component with disabled Tunisian students. Since its creation, the Tunisia Learn & Serve program has offered AMIDEAST students a wide variety of service opportunities. Learn & Serve students will spend the summer learning about this unique country as well as working with local students in association with AMIDEAST local staff. In addition, students will have the opportunity to improve their Arabic and experience life in a Tunisian home while staying with a host family for a portion of the program. Students enrolled in the Learn & Serve program take two academic courses (3 credits each): Tunisian Society and Culture and Tunisian Arabic. Both courses are intensive during the first two weeks and continuing on a less intensive basis throughout the remaining three weeks. This program includes lectures, seminars, and site visits based in Tunis. During the first portion of the program, classes take place at the AMIDEAST Tunis office in the Les Jardins district of the city, a short commute from the host family students will stay with while in Tunis. During the service portion, classes will take place in Tunis and Rimmel/Bizerte, less than an hour north of Tunis.
