Looking for something completely new? Wanting to really step out of your comfort zone and experience a different culture and way of life? Tired of the “traditional” study and volunteer abroad destinations? Then you should study abroad in Bhutan with API and have the cultural experience of a lifetime!
The API High School Summer Community Service program in Bhutan takes place in the dreamy Himalayan city of Thimphu. This program is a week-long community service program providing students with the opportunity to learn about the Bhutanese concept of Gross National Happiness, while exploring and giving back to this culturally-rich community.
Participants will work together with young children from Bhutan, as well as environmental and community beautification or construction projects around Thimphu. The group will engage in several field trips, nature hikes, and an overnight trip as part of the program. They will assist local farmers during their peak vegetable harvesting season, and use freshly harvested produce in a Bhutanese cooking class. They will even tour a monastery, receive a water blessing from monks, and learn how to meditate - it is a truly mindful experience!
Students in this program select a combination of French language and cultural electives, and have the option of taking cultural electives in English. Contact hours of French language depend on the level of French a student has. Depending on how many contact hours of French language and culture a student takes, they may be able to take 1 or 2 cultural electives (offered in English).
Live with local host families, in a shared apartment, or in a student residence and experience Paris like a local.
Students at all levels have the option of earning an additional three credits each semester if they complete an elective course taught in English exclusively for UCONN and API students through the University of Connecticut.
All students with 4 semesters of college-level French (equivalent to the intermediate level) or more are able to participate in the teaching internship for an additional 3 credits. Beginning and intermediate-level students can also do the internship, but are not eligible to earn credit or a grade for the experience. Spaces are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first served basis and is an additional fee.
The API French Language Immersion Program provides students with the opportunity to study intensive French language at the Institut Catholique de Paris, located in the 6th arrondissement (or neighborhood) of Paris. Five (5) U.S. college credits can be earned by students upon successful completion of their studies. Students will live with local host families who provide students with half-board and laundry once per week. Most classes will be held in the mornings, allowing for participation in API cultural and recreational activities in the afternoons and evenings.
Paris is well known as one of the most beautiful and intriguing cities in the world. While the city maintains its status as the premier modern city in France and a leader in politics, art and fashion, every city street holds some portion of the history of the city.
For the art lover, Paris holds hundreds of museums, all boasting incredible collections, including the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Rodin and the Centre de Georges Pompidou. For the history lover, the tour should begin in the heart of old Paris, the Ile de la Cité, which lies in the middle of the Seine River. Students can explore the past, discover the present and create their future with Aspire by API in Paris.
