The university boasts a number of field stations for the study of marine science and geology. It has particular strengths in engineering, biological sciences, chemistry, anthropology, religious studies, philosophy and law, and offers an Antarctic studies program. Additionally, Canterbury’s School of Business and Economics has recently earned AACSB business accreditation. Canterbury's academic program is divided amongst five colleges and a school of law. It is well-known for its engineering program, and it is only one of two universities in New Zealand to offer this major. It is the only university to offer speech and language therapy, and astronomy.
