BCA St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago

BCA St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago is the most southern Caribbean island, positioned off the northern edge of South America. St. Augustine is in Trinidad, the birthplace of soca and calypso music as well as the steel pan.  It’s also home to the largest Caribbean carnival, which showcases the country’s creativity and talent as participants wear extravagant handmade costumes and dance in the streets for hours. As a BCA student you can learn about the significance of carnival through courses and activities at the university. You can also join in on campus activities and clubs, or volunteer in the local community, to further connect with local people.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) offers world-class accredited academic programs. The campus provides modern teaching and learning centers with committed lecturers who are highly accessible to you. You will have a diverse learning environment with faculty and student from more than 40 countries. The university offers programming in business, humanities, engineering, gender studies, sciences and social sciences. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to take courses such as The History of Carnival in Trinidad and other courses in the Department of Festival Studies to explore Trinidadian culture and carnival year round!

As a native of Trinidad, your BCA St. Augustine Resident Director is the perfect cultural guide for your semester abroad. Through activities in St. Augustine and around Trinidad, your RD will help you get the authentic Trinidadian experience. You will also travel together outside of the city to connect to the cultural and ecological diversity Trinidad offers. Excursions vary by semester, but locations could include the Caroni Swamp, a large mangrove wetland in Trinidad and Tobago; nesting grounds for the endangered leatherback sea turtle; or forest and beach hikes to view the natural beauty of the island.

BCA Quito, Ecuador

The BCA Quito program offers many ways for you to become involved in the community and to learn about Ecuadorian culture and traditions from local people. You can join the University’s Ecua-buddies program, where you are matched with an Ecuadorian student and encouraged to do fun activities together. Living with a host family gives you the chance learn about holiday celebrations, family customs and tasty traditional dishes! If you’re interested in volunteering, there are placements available with local non-profit organizations such as a medical clinic, refugee services agency and an agency working with children with disabilities.

The Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) hosts approximately 6,000 students, including 1,000 international students, across its various campuses. USFQ is ranked in the top three universities in Ecuador and offers areas of study across a wide array of academic disciplines, making it a perfect location to fulfill major or general education requirements. You can also apply for the Latitude Zero: Ecuador Research Initiative (LOERI), which pairs you with a USFQ faculty member completing research in their field. Or, you can challenge yourself and connect to the community through an internship in education, social sciences or health professions.

Your Resident Director will guide you throughout the semester, helping you understand and process your experiences and gain the confidence you need to explore Quito on your own. Together you will traverse the historical center of Quito, visit a cloud forest and hike around volcanic lakes, all while learning about the rich Andean culture. As part of the program you will spend five days in the Amazon Rainforest where you will meet indigenous people living in the Amazon and learn more about their history, traditions and struggle to live in an area polluted through oil exploration. Other excursions outside of the city vary by semester but in the past have included the Galapagos Islands or Cochasqui and Otavalo.
