Tetouan is a small city nestled between Tangier and Algeciras in Spain. With friendly, generous residents, the city’s small size allows for true cultural immersion and exciting glimpses of Moroccan life. Nature buffs will also enjoy beautiful beaches that are some of the most noteworthy in the Mediterranean area and are only a few kilometers from the city, and the sprawling Riff mountain range that spreads more than 500 kilometers from Tetouan. With a small, coastal feel and local, cultural hotspots, Tetouan is a welcoming treasure for visitors and students.

While studying Arabic in Tetouan, you can enjoy the city’s excellent beaches, which are undoubtedly among the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean area, and its evergreen Rif Mountains, which spread eastwards along a distance of more than 500 kilometres and its five-century-old Medina.

BCA Quito, Ecuador

The BCA Quito program offers many ways for you to become involved in the community and to learn about Ecuadorian culture and traditions from local people. You can join the University’s Ecua-buddies program, where you are matched with an Ecuadorian student and encouraged to do fun activities together. Living with a host family gives you the chance learn about holiday celebrations, family customs and tasty traditional dishes! If you’re interested in volunteering, there are placements available with local non-profit organizations such as a medical clinic, refugee services agency and an agency working with children with disabilities.

The Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) hosts approximately 6,000 students, including 1,000 international students, across its various campuses. USFQ is ranked in the top three universities in Ecuador and offers areas of study across a wide array of academic disciplines, making it a perfect location to fulfill major or general education requirements. You can also apply for the Latitude Zero: Ecuador Research Initiative (LOERI), which pairs you with a USFQ faculty member completing research in their field. Or, you can challenge yourself and connect to the community through an internship in education, social sciences or health professions. 

Your Resident Director will guide you throughout the semester, helping you understand and process your experiences and gain the confidence you need to explore Quito on your own. Together you will traverse the historical center of Quito, visit a cloud forest and hike around volcanic lakes, all while learning about the rich Andean culture. As part of the program you will spend five days in the Amazon Rainforest where you will meet indigenous people living in the Amazon and learn more about their history, traditions and struggle to live in an area polluted through oil exploration. Other excursions outside of the city vary by semester but in the past have included the Galapagos Islands or Cochasqui and Otavalo.

BCA Valladolid, Spain

Enjoy churros and hot chocolate – a favorite snack in Valladolid – as you meet with your language exchange group, which includes study abroad students and local English-language learners of all ages. You’ll quickly share your country’s customs, traditions, slang words and sense of humor with each other. Spend time with your host family sharing meals, learning about their traditions and experiencing some of Valladolid’s celebrations, such as La Feria, a fall celebration dedicated to the patron saint of Valladolid, or the spring celebration of Semana Santa, one of the largest holy weeks in the world. You can also volunteer with organizations working in the community.

Your BCA Valladolid Resident Director was born and raised in the city and is committed to helping you find all the treasures it offers – even some unknown to many residents! Your RD helps you plug into festivals and activities going on in area. You’ll also venture outside of Valladolid with your RD as a guide. Excursions vary each semester but in the past have included Segovia, known for its iconic ancient Roman aqueduct; and Salamanca, home to one of the most beautiful plazas mayores in Spain

As an educational center focused entirely on Spanish language and culture, Universitas Castellae offers individualized attention to its students. The school hosts a small number of U.S. and other international students each semester. Universitas is in the heart of Valladolid with classrooms in the historic and culturally significant Plaza del Viejo – the city’s first bullring. Classes usually occur in the morning, so you can use the afternoon to pursue volunteer or internship opportunities in a variety of disciplines or interact with native speakers and explore the city independently.
