IES Abroad Dublin - Writers Program

Global brilliance begins here.

IES Abroad Dublin - Writers Program

Whether you approach writing as a future vocation or as a creative outlet, our courses help you discover and explore your voice and hone your craft. From short story writing and the graphic novel to digital communication and writing for the screen, our courses cover a wide variety of styles and genres. The required 1-credit Writing for the 21st Century Workshop is designed to tie these varied skills together, and this workshop can be combined with a range of writing-related courses, Irish studies courses, or an internship or service learning placement to create your 16-credit program. Participating in a writing-focused internship or service learning placement and accompanying seminar is a unique way to apply what you’re learning in your writing classes within a real-world setting. Each semester, an anthology of all types of student work will be compiled, and you'll also have the option of reading it in front of an audience. Dublin will also be your classroom. Inspiration abounds in this city that writers such as Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Seamus Heaney, and Jonathan Swift called home. Visit the Dublin Writers Museum and James Joyce Cultural Centre to explore the city’s rich literary past, and don’t miss seeing the 7th century Book of Kells housed in Trinity College Dublin. Does it get much better for a writer? We want you to feel at home in Dublin, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad experience possible.

Explore the global impact of Britain on Western culture, including art, literature, and financial and political systems. Choose from more than 40 IES Abroad-taught courses taught by expert local faculty at our Center, as well as a course at one of our prestigious local partner universities—City University, Queen Mary, or the School of Oriental & African Studies. Not only are there hundreds of courses and disciplines available through our partner universities, but you also have the opportunity to make local British and international friends. Additional unique offerings include our Global Leadership Certificate for students interested in leadership studies (see page 14) and our creative workshop courses that focus on the production of a piece of creative work (writing, film, or fine art). While adding study abroad to your résumé is impressive enough, adding an international internship is even more powerful, and can help distinguish your application for graduate school or a job opportunity in today’s competitive market. Before you depart, we talk to you about the type of placement you’d like and then work to match you with a placement in London. Service learning placements are also available if you would like to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s culture and society.
