South Africa: Education and Social Change

This summer program examines the role of education in South Africa in the context of the country’s historical circumstances, contemporary public policy, and social and economic development. Students typically spend time at primary and secondary schools as well as adult educational centers in urban and rural KwaZulu-Natal. Czech Republic: Arts and Social Change

Work directly with artists and social innovators to create an independent project in visual arts, creative writing, or performing arts practice or theory. Study with a dynamic community of visual, performing, and literary artists, where art and creative dissent have played a decisive role in shaping social and political change. This program will allow you to choose either an arts-based research project that integrates research methods with creative writing or visual or performing arts practice or, alternately, a field-based research project using traditional qualitative research methods. You will be immersed in the Czech Republic’s contemporary art scene and given the opportunity to explore the country’s rich artistic heritage. You will also be challenged to consider the relationship between art, politics, and society in the country’s historic and contemporary contexts.
