The Master of Arts in Teaching Reading/Reading Certificate program (MATR) is designed to help teachers follow USF’s mission to pursue social justice and the common good by ensuring that all students have fair access to high-quality education with a foundation in literacy. The program prepares new and experienced K-12 educators as reading professionals who provide expert literacy instruction in their own classrooms, work as reading tutors and literacy support providers, serve as school literacy coaches, and contribute to the larger debate on literacy policy as engaged scholars.
The Special Education Master’s and Mild/Moderate Education Specialist Credential Program is designed to prepare interns for special education careers in diverse, multicultural, urban schools. The program offers two pathways. One for candidates who already hold a teaching credential and one for those who are new to the profession. Both of the program pathways include working as paid intern teachers in Bay Area schools. This program can also include the Bilingual Authorization.
The Teacher Education program prepares reflective practitioners who foster intellectual growth, personal development, and multicultural democratic community in their classrooms and schools. Our candidates learn how to provide their students — especially those most vulnerable to injustices — with an equitable, responsive, and empowering classroom experience. Teacher candidates are recommended by USF to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for the Preliminary Multiple Subjects (36 units) or Single Subject (34 units) Teaching Credential with optional Bilingual Authorization in Spanish.
Our master's program is designed for educators who are excited about the potential technology offers for increasing student engagement and learning. Our students want to extend their skills for implementing relevant technology-enhanced activities in their own learning environments. The hands-on quality of the Educational Technology program addresses the disparity between understanding the functionality of technology and knowing how it can be taught to students. More accurately, it’s not just why you’d use technology, but how it could be strategically implemented.
Learning and instruction is the application of psychological principles and concepts to solve problems in educational and training settings. Our program examines individual differences, cognitive and social development, learning and motivational theory, instructional design, curriculum delivery, classroom management, and assessment through research and hands-on experience. Using the latest technology to assist in instructional delivery and support, coursework focuses on learners and learning, instructional settings, research skills, and special education.

Our program equips students with the skills needed to engage in scholarship, teaching and advocacy work that addresses many of the key issues impacting education today.
The School Counseling/Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential program prepares counselors to address the social, cultural, emotional, and academic needs of children and youth in urban and diverse schools. The program seeks to improve the human condition by training counselors to become social justice agents of change who promote equitable conditions inside and outside of schools. We promote systemic change — in response to rising caseloads — educating candidates how to respond to students at a group level. Our curriculum focuses on policy development, systems change, program evaluation, and data analysis in order to effectively implement programmatic changes that serve large numbers of students. It’s an innovative approach to school counseling, and it makes our graduates very attractive job candidates, evident in our 99% job placement rate over the last 6 years.
Students in the Master of Arts in Teaching: Urban Education and Social Justice (MAT: UESJ) program will explore critical, transformative pedagogies as a part of their preparation to teach in urban schools. The MAT: UESJ curriculum focuses on the complex learning strengths and needs of urban students from diverse cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Candidates will learn through a combination of coursework, fieldwork, action research, and professional development activities.
