Italy is a country that is rich in culture and history. From the ancient Roman Empire throughout centuries, Italy has heavily influenced global culture. Because the list of Italy’s historical contributions to the world is incredibly massive, the modern identity of Italy is hard to pin down. It is a mixture of rich history and tradition mixed with elements of modern culture. This gives Italy the advantage of having some of the richest collections of art, cuisine, music and culture than any other country in the world.
Italy has more UNESCO Heritage Sites than any other country. If you’re a student interested in history and culture, Italy is the ideal place to study abroad. Cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice boast architecture more beautiful than a painting and are home to arguably the most treasured collections of works of the greatest artists of the Renaissance. Also, Italy is not short on its natural treasures. The Alps are a great place for a ski trip or an outdoor adventure and the beautiful landscapes of Sicily are worth paying a visit just for the sights. All of the possibilities for activities and entertainment can be a bit overwhelming, but a semester in Italy will allow you to experience one of the most popular study abroad destinations.
Known for cultural and historical landmarks, there is no shortage of sites to see and things to do. From the Colosseum in Rome, to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy offers architectural wonders that need to be seen in person. Also, who wouldn't want to try the most authentic pasta and gelato this world has to offer?

Being a first generation student, I always had an enormous pressure to do well in school in order to be successful in the future. With that being said, I never gave any thought in studying abroad because I felt it was unnecessary in order to complete my dreams. However, I always thought the idea of studying abroad was interesting but never within my reach.

Generally speaking, Italy is a place that has seen enough people of various cultures that it is generally more progressive on matters of race than other European countries. You probably will, however, experience some stares, mainly because most of the people in Italy with darker skin are immigrants from the horn of Africa and North Africa which were, briefly, part of Italy's empire in the early 20th century and with Italy’s slow moving economy, immigration has put a strain on peoples’ attitudes towards people of color.
Italy is waiting on its laws to catch up with how people actually live. Italians in general, are accepting of LGBTQ people and relationships, but have yet to legalize gay marriage. Public displays of affection, and being openly gay are not nearly as taboo as in other countries. Still LGBTQ students should do research when visiting rural areas as you would expect people from these areas to be less progressive.
Italy is modern country that has significant infrastructure in place for students with physical disabilities. Even at historic attractions, student will find ramps and entrances specifically for use by the disabled. Students with disabilities should only take standard precautions such as planning ahead to make sure routes and venues have the necessary accessibility.
Despite the history and presence of the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church, less than a third of Italians are devout Christians, so the Catholic identity is more of a traditional one. Christian student may not find many places of worship outside of the Catholic tradition. Students who practice Islam should be aware of the heightening Islamophobia in the region due to its close proximity to North Africa and the Middle East. Be prepared for stares, disrespectful comments and possible harassment.
Despite its beauty and rich history, Italy is widely considered the worst country in Western Europe for women’s rights and equality. As a student, you may experience overt sexism and catcalling, as there is still significant hypermasculine attitudes among some men. Women in positions of authority lag significantly behind other Westernized countries.
