AIFS Study Abroad in Brixen, Italian Alps, Italy (J-Term)

AIFS

Students spend 3 weeks in the heart of the Dolomites mountain range in the northern Italian Alps living in a residence in the historical center of Brixen, Italy - the oldest town in the province. The area is recognized for culinary excellence, fantastic skiing and delightful holiday markets. Students will enjoy visiting piazzas filled with festive stalls and shops selling traditional gifts and sampling vin brulé, brezel and krapfen. This is a perfect location to learn about Italian food and culture. The history/anthropology course, Italian Food and Culture, provides an examination of the deep links between geography, history and the culture of Italian regional dishes. Students will learn about the development of Italian food culture through lectures, seminars, guest lectures and tastings/visits to local producers. Topics of discussion include: Italian regional differences in food preparation; representations of Italian food practices in media/film; food symbolism in Italian culture; food ethics and sustainable agriculture; and modern fast & slow food traditions in Italy. More than $800,000 is available each year.
