Why did you decide to study abroad?
The chance to make the world my classroom and have a different perspective on the world is what mainly inspired me to take a leap on building a foundation on an international education.
How did you pay for your study abroad experience?
Studying abroad was possible through personal fundraising, my earnings from two jobs, a scholarship from the UTRGV International Programs & Partnerships Office, the Federal Pell Grant, and The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
What is one thing you wish you would have known about studying abroad before you left?
Don't let financial barriers hold you back on making yourself stand out with your resume, make sure to define yourself, take advantage of embarking on an international journey/experience through study abroad.
Did you experience any discrimination abroad because of your race, sex, religion, sexual orientation or a physical disability? If so, what did you learn from the experience?
As a Hispanic, studying abroad made me more aware of the other cultures out there in the world. Thankfully my experiences have been great while abroad and never once felt a discrimination to my own heritage due to the cultures around me as I was abroad. If anything I was building cultural sensitivity while abroad by allowing myself to learn about other cultures and further diversifying myself personally.
How has studying abroad benefited you, personally and academically?
Studying abroad has made me more aware of what I want to do with my life. The experience and skills I acquired abroad have strengthened who I am and will help supply my future aspirations of becoming a physician with the valuable traits. Through an educational standpoint, I would like to influence the Hispanic community in my region to take control of the educational path they choose to take, including adding an international educational experience during their time in college and obtaining the positive impact studying abroad can offer to students.
