Why did you decide to study abroad?
Personally, my grandfather has always been my greatest inspiration and influencer in my life. He was a teacher for more than 50 years adn was the most loving and caring person in the world. He got cancer and while he was in the hospital, he read on the newspaper about the program and motivated me to apply, He passed away a few months before the program started but I know he was very supportive and proud of me.
How did you pay for your study abroad experience?
I got a 90% scholarship of the program, that covered for housing and the tuition, and I covered the travel expenses and food.
What is one thing you wish you would have known about studying abroad before you left?
I think I would have wished to know that working with people who are very different from you is not easy but it is possible, it takes lots of patience and the ability to listen and critically analyze all points of view. To learn form everyone because every person is different and has different skills that you can learn from.
Did you experience any discrimination abroad because of your race, sex, religion, sexual orientation or a physical disability? If so, what did you learn from the experience?
As a Mexican woman and engineer in IT, I have been rejected because of my age, my nationality, my gender, which none of them are under my control or were chosen by me, I was born that way. However, that made me more resilient and empowered me to work harder to gain experiences, learn more and be better so that rejecting me by this insignificant features seems impossible because of my skills and expertise.
How has studying abroad benefited you, personally and academically?
I learned a lot about myelf, how to be independent and autosufficient and also about skills that I didn't knew had. Proffessionally, I learned to multitask, manage my time more effectively, leadership skills, tolerance, teamwork, among others.
Any additional comments or thoughts that you have about your study abroad experience
An abroad experience is the best decision you can make, you are investing on yourself and acquiring first-hand experience, both personal and professional.
