IES Abroad London – Theater Studies

IES Abroad

William Shakespeare said it best when he wrote “All the world’s a stage”—where better to study theater than the home of so many brilliant playwrights and performers?

Engage in Britain’s rich historical and contemporary theatrical tradition through theater and drama courses. In your core curriculum, you analyze the artistic, financial, and professional structures that influence theater in Britain, with an emphasis on London. You also examine key texts and performances within their relevant historical and cultural context and delve into theater criticism, reception theory, dramaturgy, and stage design.

Enhance your academic experience with a course at one of our partner universities: City, University of London or Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL). Starting Fall 2020 and beyond, we will partner with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) instead of City, University London. Our course in partnership with RADA begins with intensive workshops with RADA instructors on five periods of English drama and culminates in an independent research project guided by IES Abroad faculty. Optionally, you can supplement your IES Abroad coursework with one of a wide variety of drama courses at QMUL.

Outside of class, you’ll enjoy course-related trips that complement your studies and take you deeper into London’s theater scene. Trips vary by semester, but past events have included:

  • Attending a London Mime Festival Show and a Dance Umbrella Performance
  • Viewing a rehearsal of an accredited drama school production
  • Recording a voiceover in a professional studio
  • Meeting with a professional casting director, actor, or designer from one of the shows you attend
  • Participating in a natural casting workshop to perfect more than 30 monologues

Plus, imagine all the shows you’ll see—at least nine with IES Abroad alone. You will witness performances at small fringe theater venues and companies, as well as larger performances, to learn first-hand about the London theater industry. Expand your artistry by taking a creative workshop in playwriting. Intern as a theater assistant at a local venue to get an inside look at the London theater scene. London and all it has to offer will be part of your learning experience.
