IES Abroad Multi–Location – Emerging Economies: Buenos Aires & Santiago

IES Abroad

Designed for students interested in Business, Economics, Sociology, and Political Science, this multi-location interdisciplinary program offers a unique comparative perspective of two of the most notable emerging economies in South America: Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile.

The program begins with orientation in Buenos Aires, where the first half of the program is held, followed by a week-long, course-related trip to Peru, and the second half of the program in Santiago.

Learn about the accelerated pace of globalization and economic growth in these markets while experiencing two very different cultures, complete with their own distinct institutions, laws, and business practices and cultures. Both serve as models for both the pitfalls and opportunities surrounding economies in transition within the global marketplace.

The required core course, Emerging Economies: A Global Perspective of Opportunities & Challenges in Argentina & Chile, runs the entire semester in both locations. You will also choose two of three courses offered in both locations to provide local context to your overall study of emerging economies. In addition, an optional 3-credit Spanish course is available to support your integration into the host cultures via language learning.

The week-long, course-related trip to Peru—a country with one of the fastest growing economies in the world—will provide yet another perspective of a key Latin American country emerging into the world market. While there, you will also have the unforgettable experience of visiting Machu Picchu. Included is a visit with the Andean Alliance for sustainable development to learn about the realities, challenges, and opportunities that exist in indigenous communities. Optional field trips to Valparaíso (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Viña del Mar in Chile, and South America’s most progressive country, Uruguay, are designed to enrich your learning experience.
