IES Abroad Rome – Early Childhood Education

IES Abroad

When it comes to studying education in Italy, there’s no place like Rome. From Montessori schools to Italy’s inclusive education model, Rome has been the birthplace of various revolutionary education practices. Learn about the history of schooling in Italy on our Early Childhood Education Program, and gain hands-on experience in local classrooms that give you an inside look at global topics affecting the education world today.

While studying abroad in Rome, you take courses on child development, cross cultural psychology, the Italian education system, and more. Learn about the historical roots of Italy’s educational policies and discover the international impact of the work of Italian pedagogues like Maria Montessori, Loris Malaguzzi, and Don Lorenzo Milani. As part of your coursework, you’ll also spend time in preschools in Rome and Bologna observing best education practices and witnessing the Montessori and Reggio Emilia approaches at work.

An Italian language course supplements your education studies, and you can choose to enroll in Italian-taught or English-taught courses at Rome’s prestigious Università degli Studi Roma Tre. A variety of course disciplines are available in our other Rome programs as well, so you can complement your education studies with courses in Film, Sociology, History, Classics, and more.

You also have the option to gain international education experience by taking on an internship or service learning/social action placement. Possible placements include assisting at a local elementary or middle school, giving your time in a shelter for young girls and mothers, teaching English at a not-for-profit, or working at a daycare or children’s library. No matter your education interests, you’ll be able to actively pursue them in Rome.
