IES Abroad Rome – History & Classics

IES Abroad

With thousands of years of well-documented history, including countless writings, amazing archaeological sites, monuments, sculptures, and other artifacts, there is no better city to study History and Classics than Rome.

Today, on top of all of the history, Rome is a thriving European capital, with important roles in international politics and business. Study the effect of the past on the present in a city that has not only survived, but flourished over most of its 2,500+ year history.

Our History & Classics Program is designed to provide a thorough overview of the archaeological, political, religious, and intellectual history of Italy—from ancient to current day. Choose from a variety of courses exploring the topography, archaeology, history, urban infrastructure, works of arts, mythology, and Latin literature and epigraphy of Rome. All of the courses offered in this program feature numerous course-related trips to museums, sites, and monuments. Imagine studying the rise of the Roman Empire and taking a day trip to explore Hadrian’s Villa as part of your coursework. Or studying totalitarian regimes in Italy and Europe and visiting the WWII landmarks in and around Rome.

You also have the extraordinary opportunity to take Italian- or English-taught courses in the Humanities, Religious Studies, and Social Sciences at the prestigious Università degli Studi Roma Tre, the second largest university in Rome.

Enhance what you learn in the classroom and add international work experience to your résumé by participating in an optional internship or social action/service learning placement and accompanying seminar. Possible placements include archaeology museums and organizations, organizations dedicated to translating humanities materials, organizations focusing on the conservation of archaeological sites, or not-for-profits dedicated to preserving and promoting Italy’s cultural heritage.

A wide variety of other disciplines are offered, as well, so you can supplement your study of History and Classics with a course from another one of our programs in Rome focused on Italian language, International Relations, Sociology, and more.
