IES Abroad Rome – Sociology & Religion

IES Abroad

From ancient Roman mythology to a modern-day papal audience, there is no denying religion’s integral role in Rome’s culture throughout history.

Our Sociology & Religion Program takes you through millennia of Rome’s religious and cultural development. Courses consider the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the history of Judaism in Rome, social issues in modern Italy, and more. Opportunities to enroll in a Religious Studies or Social Science course at Università degli Studi Roma Tre add to your curriculum, and an Italian language course rounds out your Sociology or Religion focus.

Rome and its surrounding region are also your classroom. All courses are trip intensive and include faculty-led visits to some of Rome’s most significant sites for religion and sociology. Imagine spending an afternoon in Rome’s Jewish quarter or a day in Assisi taking a pilgrimage walk to the landmarks in the life of St. Francis.

An optional internship or service learning/social action placement allows you to internationalize your résumé or give back to the local community. Placement types range from religious organizations focused on community initiatives to international NGOs working with refugees, and are accompanied by a for-credit seminar. A wide variety of other disciplines are offered through our other programs in Rome, as well, so you can supplement your study of Sociology and Religion with courses in Italian language, Art History, History, Classics, and more.
