About Us

London Metropolitan University is a modern institution based in the heart of central London, with roots dating back to 1848. We have a total of 9,618 students based at our two city centre campuses, studying across undergraduate, master and doctoral levels in six academic schools. Our academic schools include the School of Art, Architecture & Design (home to some of the top ranked creative degree programmes in the UK), the Guildhall School of Business & Law, the School of Computing and Digital Media, the School of Human Sciences, the School of Social Sciences and the School of Social Professions. Our degree programmes focus on preparing students for the world of work, with employability and professional development skills woven into the curriculum at all levels. Within study abroad we aim to offer internships and service learning to students, whether they are with us for a semester or a year, ensuring they get the most out of their time in this world capital city. We are invested in delivering a high quality student experience from start to finish, whether the programme lasts one week or several years, and offer a number of specialist support services on campus for students with additional needs. Our dedicated International Development Team includes staff who can advise on full degrees, study abroad and other short programmes and who are experts in working with international students from around the world. Inclusion is one of our strategic values as an institution, where we see our diversity as a source of strength and are invested in collaboration with our students, staff and partners in order to achieve success.

Diversity Statement

London Metropolitan University is one of the most socially and culturally diverse institutions in the world. Built on a strong heritage of widening access, the institution was originally founded in 1848 to deliver evening classes to improve the ‘moral, intellectual and spiritual condition of young men in the metropolis’. Through the many incarnations of the institution since then, this ethos has remained and today a total of 96% of London Metropolitan University’s student population is from at least one group that is underrepresented in Higher Education. As an institution we are highly invested in widening access to and participation in HE, and embed this ethos in all we do to ensure we meet our mission of ‘transforming lives through excellent education’. Due to the diverse makeup of our student body, support for students from underrepresented backgrounds is built into standard University operations throughout all phases of the lifecycle. We consistently perform at a higher level than our competitors in widening access; 65% of our students are BAME; mature students make up 56% of our student body; we are increasingly becoming a destination of choice for disabled students; 97.2% of our UK students come from state schools or colleges; and the vast majority of our students are first generation.
