Students with Disabilities in the UAE

Posted on October 14, 2020

Abstract

The law prohibits discrimination on the basis of disabilities. However, the UAE government has not effectively enforced the law and disabled persons find it more difficult to find employment, and access to healthcare and education. Furthermore, in the UAE, students with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what they find in the United States. Although the UAE has several modern cities, the level of service outside of newly constructed areas is not comparable to the United States. This includes the availability of public transportation attuned to the needs of those with disabilities, well-designed sidewalks and road crossings, and accessible businesses. In recent years however, the government has taken action to improve accessibility and provide education access to disabled persons though capacity is still limited.
